Printing Media with Full or Spot Color
Full or Spot Color | Automotive Design Gallery
When printing color media for car dealer print marketing, a typical printing press will use a four-color process based on cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow, and black. Combinations of these colors then create all other colors on the printed items. It’s a traditional method for printing full color, and works very well for most materials. You will need to specify full-color printing for materials that use a printing press. Only black is used for black or grey-scale printing, since it will be more accurate than trying to use other colors to create grey.
Spot color can create a more vivid product, but uses a different process. Spot printing specifies colors for a particular part of the image, such as a text banner or part of a picture. It can be effective when the number of colors for the printed material are three or less, but will become expensive when additional colors are needed. Spot color has become more popular with desktop publishing systems, because they provide a much larger palette of color choices than a standard four-color system.
Many desktop systems use the Pantone Matching System (PMS) for color choices. The Pantone system uses a series of standard color specifications for thousands of colors. When a graphic designer is creating text or graphics using the Pantone system, they choose the color they desire based on its equivalent PMS code. Even if the graphics monitor doesn’t accurately show the PMS color chosen by the graphics designer, he or she knows the color printer will accurately print the correct color. This occurs because the PMS system embedded in the printer will precisely meter the correct ink mixture to print the color that matches the PMS code.
